Situated near the northern coastline of Washington, Ferndale is located in Whatcom County and has a population of about 9,000 people. The city was originally named Jam because it was located next to a logjam on the Nooksack River; however a schoolteacher who taught in the areas original schoolhouse decided to change the name to Ferndale, after the ferns that grew around the schoolhouse. The city has also been known for having an excellent school system. Today, Ferndale is mostly an agricultural city and is a major producer of red raspberries. Some fun town events include farmers markets, the Settler’s Pioneer Picnic, and the annual Street Festival that has taken place for over a century. 14 golf courses are also located in the surrounding area.
