About Hoquiam

Located in Grays Harbor County, western Washington, Hoquiam is a port town located on Grays Harbor at the mouth of the Hoquiam River. The name was derived from a Chehalis Indian word meaning “hungry for wood.” The area was first settled in 1859 when pioneers were attracted to the virgin forest in the region. Hoquiam developed into a lumbering center, where it manufactured wood products and machine tools. The city’s economy also consisted of fishing and fish canneries. Some popular attractions located in Hoquiam include Hoquiam Castle, which is a mansion built in 1897 for sawmill owner Robert Lytle, and Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, which is a sanctuary for migratory shorebirds. The city is also the home of the internationally renowned Loggers’ Playday, which consists of a parade and logging competition each September. The local Hoquiam High School Grizzlies is also a very prominent athletic team in the area.
