About Kelso

The city of Kelso is located in Cowlitz County, southwestern Washington, along the Cowlitz River. The city was built on the site of the Cowlitz Indian village of Tiahanakshih, which was named Kelso by Peter Crawford who settled in the area in 1847 and named it after his hometown in Scotland. The city’s economy consists primarily of lumbering, fishing, dairying, and fruit growing. Kelso has a current population of about 12,000 residents. The school system in Kelso consists of 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and a newly renovated Kelso High School.
