Located in Jefferson County, Port Townsend has a population of over 8,000 residents, and is the county seat and only incorporated city of Jefferson County. The city is known for its natural, stunning scenery at the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula, many Victorian style buildings remaining from its late nineteenth century era, numerous annual cultural events, and maritime center for sea related industries and crafts. The city also contains its own Port Townsend historical district. Port Townsend is also called the “City of Dreams “because of the belief that the city would grow to contain the largest harbor on the west coast of the U.S. Because the city’s port was so large, and overseas vessels often came into the port, the shipping of goods and timber from the area was a major part of the economy. Many of the buildings built in the city were built on the speculation that Port Townsend would become a major shipping port and city. However, the city suffered greatly during the Great Depression, and as other port cities grew and developed, Port Townsend lost its influence as a major port. Then, during the 1970’s, the city experienced a renaissance and the city began to grow as people started to move back into the city.
Currently, the city of Port Townsend is most famous for its jazz workshop that is held there every year. During this event, jazz musicians play in many clubs and bars throughout the city, and it is during this time that many tourists flock to the city. Within the city’s historic district, the three most popular historic buildings are the Capt. Enoch S. Fowler House, the Rothschild House, and the St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The city also considers itself to be a great art city, because there are many there are many art galleries and collectives located in the downtown district. The city also holds an Art Walk and a Kinetic Sculpture Race. Port Townsend is a charming city that has excellent preserved its unique and fascinating culture.
