Redmond is situated on the Sammamish River in King County, northwestern Washington, and approximately 16 miles northeast of Seattle. Although the city is most widely known today for being home to the headquarters of Microsoft and Nintendo of America, the city was founded in 1871 as an agricultural, fishing, and logging center. Redmond was also originally named Salmonberg, after the abundant local fish, however, the city was renamed for Luke McRedmond, who was the first post master and a local farmer in the area. It wasn’t until the completion of a bridge over Lake Washington that Redmond and the surrounding region began to boom and experience urban development. By the turn of the 21st century, Redmond was one of the fastest developing cities in the region, and has a population of over 51,000 residents.
Despite the urban development that has taken place in Redmond, the city is still nicknamed the “Bicycle Capital of the Northwest” due to its annual bike race on the city streets and it being home to the state’s only velodrome. Redmond also contains both a historic downtown district, which is home to many personally owned businesses, as well as a modern downtown district. The city has an excellent education system and one of the largest libraries in the region. Redmond also offers great recreational activities in its beautiful parks and nature trails. Other attractions in Redmond include the Redmond Derby Days, performances by various music groups, The Old Redmond Firehouse, and The Concerts at Marymoore.
