Richland is located in Benton County, south-central Washington, at the juncture of the Columbia and Yakima Rivers, and has a population of about 45,000. The city was named in 1905 for Nelson Rich, a local landowner and legislator. Richland remained a farming village until 1942, when, with the development of the atom bomb, the area became part of a reservation of the Hanford Engineer Works. Eventually, in 1958, the land was returned to private ownership and Richland was reincorporated as a city. Today, Richland’s economy has diversified to consist of much more than just agriculture.
Richland keeps its roots in both its agricultural and scientific based history. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is located here. Viticulture is also a main part of Richland’s agricultural industry. The city also offers many excellent outdoor and recreational activities, including golfing, fishing, boating, water skiing, kayaking, hunting, and hiking. Some popular natural attractions include the Badger Mountain Centennial Preserve, Arid Lands Ecology Reserve, and Hanford Reach.
