Located in Mason County, Shelton is the westernmost city on Puget Sound. Shelton is also the county seat of Mason County and has a population of about 9,000 residents. Shelton is also the only city in the state of Washington be run by the commission form of government. The city was originally named Sheltonville, after David Shelton, a delegate to the territorial legislature. The city was once served by a small fleet of steamboats that belonged to the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet. Officially incorporated in 1890, Shelton’s economy consists primarily of logging, farming, dairying, ranching, and oyster cultivation. The Simpson Timber Company is the main establishment on Puget Sound’s Oakland Bay that dominates the city’s downtown area. The city also refers to itself as the “Christmas Tree Capital.” The city of Shelton is such an excellent place to live in because of its rich history, culture, and natural splendor. The city contains numerous, beautiful parks where residents and visitors can utilize all of the recreation services that Shelton provides. Shelton also has a civic center and art commission. The city also offers its residents many other services through its great facilities.
