About Sunnyside

With a population of over 14,000 residents, Sunnyside is a beautiful city located in Yakima County. In 1902, Sunnyside’s 314 residents voted to incorporate as the town of Sunnyside. The settlement was first founded in 1893 by Walter Granger, but the name “Sunnyside” was coined by a merchant named W.H. Cline. Walter Granger was involved in the financing and construction of the Sunnyside Canal, which would provide water irrigation to the town from the Yakima River. However, the Panic of 1893, the canal project was shut down and Sunnyside’s population dwindled to only seven families. Eventually, a large group of people belonging to the German Baptist Progressive Brethren moved to Sunnyside and formed what they called the Christian Cooperative Colony. Eventually, they helped develop Sunnyside into the city it is today.

Some popular attractions in Sunnyside include the Lighted Farm Implement Parade, Darigold Dairy Fair, which is a cheese factory, and Sunnyside Historical Museum. The parade was named as one of the “Top 10” parades of its kind in the US by A&E Network. The city’s Carnegie Library is the second largest library in the Yakima Valley Regional Library System. The city, which is located in wine county, also has an excellent farmer’s market and a celebration known as Sunshine Days.
