Situated in the beautiful Yakima County, Toppenish is a charming city with a population of about 9,000 residents. During the late 1800’s, a woman of half Indian ancestry, Josephine Bowser Lillie, known as “The Mother of Toppenish,” acquired 80 acres of land through the General Allotment Act of 1887. She platted some of this land, and named it Toppenish, which is derived from either “Xuupinish” or “Thappahnish,” both of which are Indian words. “Xuupinish” translates to sloping and spreading, and “Thappahnish” translates to “People of the trail that comes from the foot of the hills.” The city of Toppenish was officially incorporated in 1907, and founded by Johnny Barnes. The city also lies inside the boundaries of the Yakima Nation’s Reservation.
