Tumwater is located in Thurston County, near where the Deschutes River enters Budd Inlet, which is the southernmost point of Puget Sound. Tumwater has a population of about 13,000, and is located near the cities of Lacey and Olympia. The city was once named Bush Prairie after George Washington Bush, the founding settler who was a former slave and later cattle rancher and father of William Owen Bush. Later, the settlement was founded as New Market in 1846, making it the first US settlement on the Puget Sound, as well as the first north of the Columbia River. Then the name was changed to Tumwater, which was derived from a Chinook Jargon phrase meaning “waterfall.” Tumwater was officially incorporated in 1875. Tumwater is especially known for its high school football programs at Tumwater High School. In the 2005 season, the school broke the all-time Washington state wins record of 273 wins, and overall has claimed four state titles and made the state playoffs 18 times. The city has attractions for everyone, including a farmer’s market, museums, parks, and recreational activities. Residents and visitors can play golf, or hike on many of the nature trails in Tumwater. A popular event in Tumwater is the Tree Lighting Festival.
