About Vashon

With a population of over 10,000 residents, the city of Vashon is located in King County, on the largest island in Puget Sound south of the Admiralty Inlet, known as Vashon-Maury Island. The island is 60 percent larger than Manhattan, but with only about 1/150 of the population. The city is locally known for its liberal politics. The island has two ferry terminals, but no bridges that connect the island to the mainland. The northern terminal connects the island to Seattle. The island was named in 1792 by explorer George Vancouver, after his friend James Vashon of the Royal Navy. At that time, Vashon Island was separate from Maury Island, but today, an isthmus built by the US Army Corps of Engineers connects the two.

Although the economy of the island is heavily based on residents commuting to Seattle and Tacoma, strawberry farms and orchards play a major role in the economy. The pressures of suburban residential development have suppressed major commercial agriculture on the island, so many small farms operate on the island, providing locals with fresh organic produce, milk, and eggs. There is an island wide tradition of holding a strawberry festival every July. One of the few Russian Orthodox Monasteries in America is also located in Vashon.
