The city of Walla Walla is located in Walla Walla County, along the Walla Walla River. Marcus Whitman, an American pioneer, established a medical mission in the area in 1836, and worked with the Cayuse Indians until he and his group were killed in 1847. This even is remembered and preserved at the Whitman Mission National Historic Site. Eventually, in 1856, a military post, Fort Walla Walla, was established, and a settlement grew up around it. This settlement was originally named Steptoeville, after Lieutenant Colonel Edward Steptoe, but later incorporated as Walla Walla. The population boomed during the Idaho gold rush of 1861, which brought pioneers who turned to ranching and agriculture.
Today, the city is a center of the wheat and truck farming industry, as well as the food processing and lumber industries, with port facilities for Columbia River barges. Several great wineries are also located nearby the city, which make it a popular vacation spot for wine enthusiasts. Some excellent schools located in the city include Walla Walla College, Walla Walla Community College, and Whitman College. The city is also known for its farmer’s market, which sells the famous Walla Walla Sweet Onion. The city also contains excellent dining and shopping districts.
