About West Richland

The city of West Richland is located in Benton County, and has an area of about 22 square miles. The city has a population of about 9,000 residents, and it is sometimes considered part of the Tri-Cities (although that makes four), which includes Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco. The first people to settle in the area were the Chemnapum Indians, who resided near the mouth of the Yakima River. Lewis and Clark were some of the many explorers who trekked in the area. Although a road was built through where West Richland is now located in 1853, the settlement didn’t really begin to grow until the 1870’s. The West Richland area is sometimes known as “Lower Yakima.” West Richland was officially incorporated in 1955, when the two towns of Enterprise and Heminger City were joined.

Because the city is located near the Columbia River, West Richland boasts some of the best recreational attractions within the entire region. The area is known for its great water skiing, boating, and picnicking. The city’s excellent, integrated park system, river shore, and wide-open living space also make West Richland a wonderful place to live. Some fun events that take place in West Richland include Concerts at the Pavilion, which are musical performances that take place at Flat Top Park every week, the Harvest Festival, Antique Truck Show, and the Veterans Day Parade.
