Located in Yakima County, south central Washington, on the Yakima River, the city of Yakima has a population of over 84,000 people. In 1891, irrigation was introduced into the are, which turned the Yakima Valley into a major agricultural region that produces apples, pears, cherries, sugar beets, mint, hops, livestock, dairying, as well as a wine making and food processing industry. The city was named for the Yakima Indians. The city was incorporated as North Yakima, but the “North” was soon dropped in 1918.
Yakima is a major tourist center and a gateway to the stunning Mount Rainier National Park. Some popular attractions in the city include the Yakima Valley Museum, Capitol Theater, Seasons Performance Hall, Westside’s Warehouse Theater, the Yakima Area Arboretum, and the events that take place in the Yakima Sundome at the State Fair Park. In 1994, the city also received the All-America City Award, which greatly boosted Yakima’s reputation as a great place to live. Some of the fun and exciting events that take place in Yakima are the Central Washington State Fair, Yakima Folklife Festival, Yakima Farmer’s Market, Fresh Hop Ale Festival, and Four-Play Hockey Tournament at the Yakima Ice Arena.
