About Clarksburg

With a population of about 17,000 residents, Clarksburg is a city in and the county seat of Harrison County. Located along the West Fork River, the city is also known as the “jewel of the hills.” The city was formed in 1785, and named for General George Rogers Clark. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which arrived in 1856, helped bring economic prosperity to the region. During the 20th century, Clarksburg was primarily an industrial and manufacturing center, primarily in the glass and coal industry. Since 1995, the city has been home to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division, which is the largest division of the FBI. Clarksburg is also home to the Fairmont State College.
