Dunbar is a charming city located in Kanawha County, along the Kanawha River. The city has a population of over 8,000 residents. The city was incorporated in 1921, by an Act of the West Virginia Legislature. The city was named for Mary Dunbar after she inherited the land from George Washington. Prior to the establishment of Dunbar, the area was settled by Native Americans. The city began as a farming community, until the glass and bottling industries helped to expand and develop the city. Although Dunbar is a relatively small city, and has the atmosphere of a small community, it has all of the great amenities of a large city.
Dunbar often attracts people from around the region because it holds the annual Critter Dinner and the Fall Festival, which features arts and crafts, and concerts by national groups. The city offers excellent historical, dining, shopping, and recreational experiences. Several beautiful parks, including Wine Cellar Park, are located in Dunbar. Three large, restored stone walk-in wine cellars that date to pre-Civil War times are still on display in the park. The park also contains a lake and great picnic areas, as well as a Olympic-size swimming pool, a recreation center, and playgrounds.
