Located in Randolph county, eastern West Virginia, Elkins is situated along the Tygart Valley River, about 35 miles southeast of Clarksburg. Elkins originally began as a rural settlement known as Leadsville. The town was laid out after the Western Maryland Railway built a railway in the area, and the town was renamed in honor of US Senator Stephen Benton Elkins, who pressed for the establishment of the railroad in the area. Elkin’s economy consists primarily of livestock, timber, and limestone industries, as well as light manufactures. The city is also home to the Davis and Elkins College. The city is also the headquarters of the Monongahela National Forest. Some popular attractions in Elkins are the Mountain State Forest Festival, which is the oldest and largest festival in West Virginia, and the Bowden National Fish Hatchery and Stuart Recreation Area. Other popular events that take place in Elkins are the Augusta Heritage Festival, Pickin’ in the Park, and the Randolph County International Ramp Cookoff and Festival.
