The beautiful city of Grafton is situated in Taylor County, northern West Virginia, on the Tygart Valley River, just north of Tygart Lake. The area was first settled in 1852 by construction crews working on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The city is thought to be named for the “graftin’ on” (junction) point for branch railway lines. The city was charter in 1856, and it was a key rail center during the American Civil War. Grafton’s economy consists of the manufacturing of glass, paper, and rubber products. It is also believed that the celebration of Mother’s Day originated in Grafton, when Anna Jarvis observed the anniversary of her mother’s death in 1908 at the Andrews Methodist Church. One of the major attractions near Grafton is the Tygart Lake State Park. The park is located along the 1,750 acre Tygart Lake. Tygart Lake offers great boating and fishing, while the park provides for fun hiking, camping, shopping, and dining opportunities. A beautiful golf course is also located near Grafton. The International Mother’s Day Shrine is also located in the city. Grafton also boasts having one of the oldest observances of Memorial Day in America.
