About Hurricane

Pronounced “her’-i-kin”, Hurricane is located in Putnam County, and has a population of about 6,000 residents. The city was named after Hurricane Creek, which was, in turn, named after a group of trees at the mouth of the river that were bent in one direction. The site, which was surveyed by people commissioned by General George Washington, was said to have appeared as if it were struck by a hurricane. An interesting thing to note is that a small village 10 miles southeast of Hurricane is named Tornado. Hurricane’s history dates back to 1873, when a railroad track was laid through the town and a small depot was established. During this time, the city’s Main Street, including other businesses, developed. Hurricane was incorporated as a town in 1888, and then as a city in the 1970’s. Many residents and visitors enjoy all the city has to offer, such as unique, specialty shops, historic, scenic murals, and its peaceful atmosphere. The Waves of Fun at Valley Park, which is a fun water park, is also located in the city. In addition to excellent shopping and dining, the city also hosts community events such as the Harvest Festival, Shop Til You Drop, a City Wide Garage Sale, Christmas Parade, and Live Nativity. Hurricane also offers fun recreational activities such as skateboarding, fishing, swimming, and much more.
