The city of Martinsburg is situated in Berkeley County, in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. It lies only 16 miles southwest of Hagerstown, Maryland. The region was settled in 1732 and laid out by Adam Stephen, who became a general in the American Revolution. He named the settlement for Colonel Thomas b. Martin, a nephew of Virginia landowner Thomas Fairfax. The town was chartered in 1778, and didn’t develop until after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was established in the area in 1842. The city is located in a prosperous agricultural region that thrives on fruit-growing, mainly apples, but the city also and diversified its economy to include the manufacturing of glass, cement, plastics, and packaging. Martinsburg is a charming city that is known for its colonial architecture, which includes the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church and Bunker Hill Mill. The Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area is about 10 miles west of the city. Some of the great events that take place in the region include concerts in the park, Berkeley County Youth Fair, Bike Night, Pickin’ in the Panhandle, Spirit of America, Main Street Chili Cook Off, Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival, and the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony.
