With a population of over 10,000 residents, Moundsville is a beautiful city located in Marshal County, in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Moundsville lies along the Ohio River, and is located just south of Wheeling. During the 1770’s, the settlement was known as Grave Creek, which was named for a large burial mound that is now located in the city limits and built by the Adena People. However, in 1798, the town was renamed Elizabethtown, and then in 1866, Elizabethtown and the nearby community named Mound City were joined as Moundsville. Today, Moundsville’s economy consists of a successful coal mining industry, as well as the plastic, glassware, and abrasive manufacturing industries. Some of the popular attractions in Moundsville are a state penitentiary, built during the American Civil War, which closed in 1995, and Grave Creek Mound, which is one of the nation’s largest conical earthen burial mounds. Numerous artifacts dating from approximately 1000 BC to the 1st century AD have been recovered from two excavation sites in the mound. Moundsville is a charming city with excellent views of the natural landscapes surrounding it.
