Saint Albans is a charming city located in Kanawha County, at the confluence of the Kanawha and Coal Rivers. The city has a population of about 12,000 residents. The city was laid out in 1816, but was originally known as Philippi, and Philip Thompson, an early settler in the region. The name was later changed to Coalsmouth, because of its location at the mouth of the Coal River. In 1868, the city was incorporated as Kanawha City, but in 1871 the name was changed once again to St. Albans, after the city in Vermont. Main Street, located in downtown St. Albans, is no longer called Olde Main Plaza. The city offers excellent dining and shopping experiences, especially in the Gateway Shopping Plaza and the city’s downtown Historic District. The Main Street Historic District is one of the most popular and unique places to visit in all of Saint Albans. Some attractions located near the city include the Clay Center for Arts and Science, West Virginia Cultural Center, Charleston Town Center Mall, Mountain Stage, and the Big Bend Golf Course.
