Located in Wood County, along the Ohio River, the city of Vienna has a population of about 11,000 residents. Vienna is primarily a suburb of the nearby Parkersburg. The city was incorporated in 1935, and was named for the town in New Jersey because the founder of the Vienna, Dr. Joseph Spencer participated in a Revolutionary War battle there. Vienna was primarily a farming community, until the late 19th century, when roads were improved and tracks for an electric railway between Parkersburg, Vienna, and Marietta were laid. Today, the city is a hub of commerce within the Mid Ohio Valley, and contains many retail stores, shopping malls, motels, restaurants, and manufacturing facilities. Vienna also contains many excellent medical and educational facilities, as well as great clubs and community organizations. The city also has many art establishments and events. The numerous, beautiful parks that are located in Vienna also provide for many fun recreational and outdoor activities.
