About Weirton

Weirton is located on the border between Brooke and Hancock counties, in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Weirton is also situated along the Ohio River. The area was originally settled during the American Revolution, and it has a long history of iron making. In the 1790’s, Peter Tarr built a crude furnace to smelt local iron ore that was located on the nearby King’s Creek. The furnace was once used to produce cannonballs that were used by the US fleet against the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Later, in 1909, Ernest Tener Weir founded the Weirton Steel Company, which became one of the largest companies in the area. Before it merged with surrounding communities in 1947 to form the present city, Weirton was one of the nation’s largest unincorporated company towns. In addition to steel, the city also has a coal mining industry, and manufactures metal cans, metal stamping, and plating.

Some of the popular destinations in the area include Tomlinson Run State Park and Mountaineer Racetrack and Resort. The city also provides all of the essential services for its residents, including medical care, and top-rated schools. More than half a dozen universities and colleges, including Franciscan University, University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University, are located within an hour drive of Weirton. Weirton also offers great recreational services at its outstanding recreational facility, Thomas E. Milsop Community Center, which is known as “The Center of Activity” for the city. Residents and visitors can take part in all kinds of sports and activities, and have access to sauna rooms, health clinics, senior citizen social, and much more. The William Country Club and Pleasant Valley Country Club, as well as numerous golf courses, are also located in the area.
