About Algoma

Located in Kewaunee County, Algoma has a population of about 4,000 residents. The city was originally named Ahnapee, until it was renamed Algoma in 1879. The city was founded in 1834 by Joseph McCormick of Manitowoc, and in 1851, Irish and English pioneers established a settlement called Wolf River. This name was a loose translation of the Indian word Ahnapee, which means “land of the great gray wolf.” Then, immigrants from Germany, Bohemia, Belgium, and Scandinavian countries settled in the lakeside community of Wolf River. They helped establish the first businesses, which consisted of a sawmill, general store, and churches. The name Algoma is derived from an Indian word meaning park of flowers. Algoma also contained the largest commercial fishing fleet on Lake Michigan, and fishing is still a major tourist attraction today.

The most popular and exciting event that takes place in Algoma is Shanty Days, which is an annual city-wide celebration. The festival consists of ethnic foods, music, beer, arts and crafts, a parade, fireworks, wine tasting, a street fair, and much more. Some historic attractions in Algoma include the von Stiehl Winery and the Art Dettman Fish Shanty. Algoma is an excellent city to live in because of its numerous festivals and events, and great shopping, dining, and recreational opportunities.
