About Appleton

The beautiful city of Appleton is located in Outagamie, Winnebago, and Calumet counties, and is the county seat of Outagamie County. The city is situated along the Fox River, just north of Lake Winnebago, and only 30 miles southwest of Green Bay. The Native American tribes of the Menominee, Fox, and Winnebago Indians originally inhabited the area that was visited by French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1634. One of the first major establishments in the area was Lawrence University, and the settlement that is now the city of Appleton, which was named for Samuel Appleton, was first called Grand Chute. Appleton’s early economy consisted of flour, wool, and paper milling. Today, the city’s economy is comprised mostly of manufacturers of paper and paper products, as well as the manufacturing of fire trucks, plastics, electronic, and paper-milling and welding machinery.

The city is home to notable places such as the Fox Valley Technical College, Outagamie Museum, Houdini Historical Center, which is devoted to magician Harry Houdini, who lived in Appleton, and the Charles A. Grignon Mansion. Appleton is also known for its exciting cheese festival and Paperfest.
