About Beloit

The city of Beloit is located in Rock County, in southern Wisconsin. Beloit lies along the Illinois state border at the confluence of the Rock River and Turtle Creek, about 15 miles south of Janesville. The Winnebago Indians were the first people to settle in the area, until Caleb Blodgett of New Hampshire purchased the land from a French fur trader in 1836. In the following years, more settlers from New Hampshire arrived, calling themselves the New England Immigrating Company. Eventually, the community was named Beloit, and the village pledged land, labor, and money for the establishment of Beloit College in 1846. Beloit is located in a rich agricultural region, and is the focal point of area commerce. The city also has various manufacturing and food processing industries.

The city of Beloit is known for being the home of inventions including the speedometer, Korn Kurls, and John Francis Appleby’s twine binder. Korn Kurls are credited for the founding of the snack food industry, and are similar to present day Cheetos. Beloit is also home to a Hormel plant, the world’s largest can of chili, and the Beloit Snappers, which is a baseball team belonging to the Midwest League. Beloit also offers a wide array of great recreational activities, as well as excellent dining and shopping opportunities in the city’s downtown district. The city also hosts more than a dozen exciting festivals and events throughout the year, including Beloit Riverfest, Art Walk, Hollidazzle, Thunder on the Rock, Beloit Farmers Market, Beloit Heritage Days, and Beloit Autorama.
