About Burlington

Nicknamed “Chocolate City, U.S.A.” because of the Nestle chocolate factory built in the city, Burlington is a charming city located in Racine and Walworth County. The city has a population of over 10,000 residents. Although there was no Native American settlement in the area, Native American mounds were constructed in what is now Burlington. The first Europeans in the area were a group of French explorers and missionaries led by Francis Morgan de Vereceones, who made a portage from the Root River to the Fox River. As more settlers arrived in the area, they named it Foxville, but unanimously decided to change the name to Burlington, after the city in Vermont.

In order to celebrate its nickname as “Chocolate City, U.S.A.,” Burlington hosts an annual ChocolateFest every Memorial Day weekend. The city also has an excellent Farmer’s Market every week during the summer, where fresh, local produce is sold. The city hosts other exciting events such as the Apple Holler Blueberry Festival, Racine County Fair, Maxwell Street Days, and much more. The city’s Historic Downtown is also a popular attraction, where fine dining and shopping can be found. Burlington also has great outdoor and recreational activities at its numerous parks and lakes.
