About Elkhorn

The city of Elkhorn is the county seat of Walworth County, and has a population of about 8,000 residents. The area gained the name Elkhorn in the early 19th century, when Colonel Samuel Phoenix spotted a rack of elk antlers in a tree there. Then, during the mid 1800’s, Daniel Bradley, Milo Bradley, and LeGrand Rockwell established a village in the area because of the area’s beauty and rich soil. The city has also gained the title of ‘Christmas Card Town’ because of the unique decorations that the residents put up around the community each Christmas. Elkhorn also makes a conscious effort to keep the city’s small town feel by promoting and sometimes even offering grants to small businesses, and preventing the establishment of larger businesses in the area. One of the largest and most celebrated events in Elkhorn is the Walworth County Fair. The city has hosted this fair every year since 1851. The fair is ranked as one of the best fairs in the nation, and it attracts people from all over the country. Elkhorn also boasts a rich history, all types of affordable housing, quality education, great employment opportunities, and fun recreational activities.
