About Kenosha

Kenosha is a beautiful city and county seat of Kenosha County, which is located in southeastern Wisconsin. Kenosha lies along Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Pike River, and just north of the Wisconsin-Illinois border. The city was founded in 1835 by settlers from New York, who named the new establishment Pike Creek. Later, the settlement was renamed Southport because of its role as a shipping center, and then in 1850, it was renamed once again as Kenosha, which is derived from the Potawatomi term for “pike.” During the early 1840’s, Kenosha was a center of social reform, with examples including the founding of the Wisconsin Phalanx in the city. The Wisconsin Phalanx was a communal living experiment based on the principles of the French social theorist, Charles Fourier.

Today, Kenosha’s economy consists of manufacturers of musical instruments, tools, automobile engines, apparel, and metal processing, as well as food processing. The city is also home to Carthage College, Gateway Technical College, and the University of Wisconsin – Parkside. Harmony Hall, which is the headquarters for the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, is also located in Kenosha. Kenosha is also the home of the Kenosha Public Museum, which contains a Schaefer Mammoth bones exhibit. The Bristol Renaissance Faire, which is held annually, is also held in Kenosha.
