Located in Marinette County in northeaster Wisconsin, the city of Marinette is the county seat and has a population of about 12,000 residents. Marinette is a port city situated at the entry at the mouth of the Menominee River, opposite Menominee, Michigan, on Green Bay in Lake Michigan. The city was originally formed around a trading post that was established in 1794 by French Canadian fur trader, Stanislaus Chappu. The city was named in honor of Marinette Chevalier, the daughter of a Menominee chief, who married Willaim Farnsworth, who was a fur trader who took over the trading post in 1824. The town was officially organized in 1855.
During Marinette’s early days, it served primarily as a logging center, but it soon diversified its economy to include various manufacturers of automotive parts, fire extinguishers, firefighting equipment, paper products, and metal products. The city is also a tourist destination. Marinette is home to the Marinette County Historical Museum, which preserves the city’s rich logging history. The University of Wisconsin – Marinette campus and the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College are also located in the city. The Theatre on the Bay, located on the University of Wisconsin – Marinette campus, has hosted numerous theatrical and musical productions since 1966. The city is noted for its 20 beautiful parks and 14 stunning waterfalls.
