About Mukwonago

The village of Mukwonago is situated on the border of Waukesha and Walworth County, and has a population of about 9,000 residents. Mukwonago is located only 30 miles west of Milwaukee. The area where Mukwonago is now located was once a Native American village, which was the tribal seat of the Bear Clan of the Potowatomi Indians. The village’s name is derived from the Native American word, “mequanego,” which means “place of the bear.” The village gained its name in 1844 due to the similarity to Mequon, and many of the roads and streets are named after the Mukwonago’s founders.

Although the Mukwonago is currently going through much development, the village is making a conscious effort to preserve its rich history, excellent quality of life, and successful economy in the process. Mukwonago also hosts many exciting community events and festivals including Maxwell Street Days, Mukwonago Lions Summerfeste, Heritage Days, Croation Day Picnic, Fall Fest, and Midnight Magic. The village is also home to several, beautiful parks, which offer a wide array of fun, recreational activities for everyone.
