Located in Shawano County, the city of Shawano is the county seat and has a population of about 9,000 residents. The city’s named in derived from a Native American term from the Menominee language, meaning “to the south.” Two Indian Nations, an Amish community, and a variety of ethnic groups make up the rich mixture of culture and lifestyles in the region. The area was originally settled as a timber center because of the dense, forested lands in the region, but today, the region’s economy has diversified to include various manufacturers and industries.
