Located in Dane County, the city of Stoughton is situated along the Yahara River and is only 20 miles southeast of Wisconsin’s capital, Madison. The city has a bustling population of about 13,000 residents. Stoughton is widely known for its Norwegian heritage, and the city hosts many cultural celebrations related to it Norwegian ties. The city was founded in 1847 by Luke Stoughton, who was an Englishman from Vermont, and during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, many Norwegian immigrants settled in the area. It is also believed that the concept of the coffee break originated in Stoughton, when immigrant workers agreed to work under the condition that they were allowed to go home every morning and afternoon to tend to chores and, of course, drink coffee. Because of Stoughton’s rich heritage and history, the city is home to numerous, unique, exciting cultural festivals including Stoughton Fair, Stoughton’s Victorian Holiday Weekend, a Norwegian festival known as Syttende Mai, and the Coffee Break Festival. Lake Kegonsa, which is located nearby, offers great fishing and boating, and the Kegonsa State Park offers beautiful, scenic nature trails.
