About Wisconsin Rapids

Situated in Wood County, central Wisconsin, the city of Wisconsin Rapids has a population of about 19,000 residents. Wisconsin Rapids is also the county seat of Wood County. The first Europeans didn’t settle in the area until the 1830’s, and it wasn’t until 1920 that the area gained the name Wisconsin Rapids. Before that, the community was divided by the Wisconsin River; the west side was incorporated as Centralia and the east side as Grand Rapids. Then, in 1900, the two communities merged to form the community of Grand Rapids; however, the name was changed to Wisconsin Rapids in 1920 in order to avoid confusion between Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Although Wisconsin Rapid has a rich papermaking manufacturing history, the city also has a major cranberry industry. The city is also the corporate home of Renaissance Learning, Inc., which is an international educational software company. Residents and visitors can find many dining and shopping experiences in Wisconsin Rapid’s downtown district, as well as several art galleries. The city is also home to numerous events and festivals including the Souper Snow Sculpture Spectacular, New Auto Show, Wakely’s Winter Feast, Lake Arrowhead SnoBlast Winterfest, Prairie Chicken Festival, Pioneer Festival, Cranberry Blossom Festival, farmers’ markets, and much more.
