The city of Casper is the county seat of Natrona County in east-central Wyoming, and has a population of about 50,000 residents. Casper is the second largest city is Wyoming and is situated along the North Platte River. The city was originally a settlement that grew up around Fort Caspar at the site of a pioneer crossing on the Pony Express route and Oregon Trail. The fort was named in honor of Lieutenant Caspar Collins. The town was founded in 1888 as a tent town before the arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railway and named Casper, which was the misspelled version of “Caspar.”
Casper’s economy at the turn of the 21st century was based upon the production of oil and natural gas, the manufacture of oil-field equipment, mining, cattle and sheep raising, and ranching. However, today, it is comprised primarily of a service economy, and Casper is also the trading center for a large hinterland. Casper is also home to Casper College and Casper Mountain Park and Medicine Bow National Forest. One of the most exciting events hosted in Casper is the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo. The Fort Caspar Museum is also located in the city.
