Situated in the beautiful Converse County, east-central Wyoming, the city of Douglas is located on the North Platte River. Douglas is only about 52 miles east of Casper. The city was founded in 1886 when the railroad extended to the area, and it was originally named Tent Town. However, the settlement was renamed to honor Lincoln’s political opponent, Stephen A. Douglas. Today, Douglas’s economy is based upon the trade of livestock, grain, poultry, and petroleum. Douglas has a population of about 6,000 residents. In 1996, the city was declared one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America by Norman Crampton in his book The 100 Best Small Towns in America.
Some major establishments in Douglas include the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, the restored site of Fort Fetterman, which was built in 1867 during the Sioux wars, and the Ayres Natural Bridge, which is a 100 foot long arch spanning the La Prele Creek. The Medicine Bow National Forest and the Thunder Basin National Grassland is also located just outside the city. Douglas is also known for hosting the exciting Wyoming State Fair, which takes place there each year. The former Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad Passenger Depot, which is located in Douglas, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
