About Gillette

Located in northeastern Wyoming, the town of Gillette is the county seat of Campbell County and is situated between the Black Hills and the Bighorn Mountains. The arrival of the Burlington and Missouri River railroads in 1891 helped spur the establishment of the town, and the settlement was named for Edward Gillette, who was a railroad construction engineer. Today, Gillette is a trade center for a region that produces grain, livestock, oil, coal, and uranium, as well as a hunting region for deer and pronghorn. Located nearby the town is a state university agricultural experimental station and the gigantic Wyodak open-pit coal mine. The Town of Gillette has a population of about 20,000 residents.

Because of Gillette’s energy related economy, the town also calls itself the “Energy Capital of the Nation.” Some noteworthy structures and establishments in Gillette include the LORAN-C transmitter guyed radio mast, which, standing at 213.36 meters high, is the tallest structure in Wyoming, the Gillette-Campbell County Airport, and the Wyoming Center, which is a 9,000 seat arena that is located at the Cam-Plex just east of Gillette. The town also has one newspaper, The Gillette News-Record, which was established in 1904 and serves all of Campbell County.
