The city of Green River is the county seat of Sweetwater County and is located in southwestern Wyoming, about 13 miles west of Rock Springs. The city is situated in a unique part of land that is surrounded by rock formations at an elevation of 6,600 feet. The city originated on the bank of the river, for which it was named as a trappers’ rendezvous and a stop of the overland stagecoach route. After the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868, the city became a distribution point and later the eastern terminus of the Oregon Short Line Railroad. Today, the city has a population of about 12,000 and has an economy that is comprised of forest, livestock, and farm products, as well as soda ash that is produced from the trona mines nearby.
