About Rawlins

Located in south-central Wyoming, just east of the Continental Divide at an elevation of 6,755 feet, the city of Rawlins is the county seat of Carbon County. The city has a population of about 9,000 residents. Rawlins was founded when the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1868 and was originally named Rawlins Springs for U.S. Army Chief of Staff General John A. Rawlins, who requested that a freshwater spring in the area be named after him. It was from this area that the “Rawlins Red” pigment from the local paint mines was sent 2,000 miles to be used on the Brooklyn Bridge in 1874. Since its establishment, Rawlins has become a railroad division point, a supply center for ranching, lumbering, and coal mining, and a tourist rest stop for the nearby national forests. The city boasts an excellent, relaxed quality of life due to its beautiful natural scenery, abundance of recreational activities, modern amenities including access to medical facilities, and affordable housing. Some of the great recreational activities that can be found in Rawlins include hiking, hunting, snow mobile riding, river rafting, mountain climbing, and fishing.
