About Worland

The city of Worland is situated in Washakie County, north-central Wyoming, on the Bighorn River. The area was first settled in 1900 on the west side of the river as Camp Worland, which started as a stagecoach stop. Later, in 1906, the settlement was moved to the east side of the river where the railroad was supposed to be built. The settlement was named for one of the early settlers in the area, C.H. “Dad” Worland. Currently, Worland is a service center for a region that produces oil, sugar beets, livestock, and natural gas. Worland has a population of about 6,000 residents.

The city of Worland is home to the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area, a state industrial school for boys, and the Colby Site, which marks a large mammoth kill from which prehistoric Clovis culture projectiles have been recovered. The Worland Municipal Airport is also located near the city. Worland also offers excellent outdoor and recreational activities including golfing, fishing, hunting, backpacking, skiing, camping, snowshoeing, and boating. The city of Worland has a relaxing, small town feel and something to offer to everyone.
