MOJAVE — Plans to reopen the historic Golden Queen Mine southwest of Mojave are on track according to a report from Vancouver-based Golden Queen Mining, Inc.
The mine, which was a major employer in the Mojave area in the years leading up to World War II, is planned for operation using the “heap leach”process to extract gold and silver, which are at record high prices on world markets.
According to the report prepared by Golden Queen President Lutz Klingmann, the company is working with Kern County agencies to meet regulatory requirements to reopen the mine.
Klingmann reported that Golden Queen has hired a Vancouver firm to prepare a report to assess mineral reserves in the mine on Soledad Mountain and expects to receive the report at the end of this month.
A 2005 report estimated the mine site to contain 2.1 million ounces of gold and 37.6 million ounces of silver in the “measured” and “indicated” categories, and a further 511,000 ounces of gold and 11.1 million ounces of silver in the “inferred” category.
