A town of nearly 31,000 just outside of Waterbury in the western part of the state, Naugatuck, Connecticut, is a city that began as a farming community in the early 18th century, switched to a major manufacturing city in the 19 and 20th centuries and is now transforming again as manufacturing becomes less of a giant industry in the U.S. The town spans both sides of the Naugatuck River south of Waterbury, and includes the communities of Union City, Straitsville and Millville. Residents who seek a house for rent or an apartment for rent here will find eight elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school serving the area's children. Naugatuck is often referred to as "Rubber town" as it was the home of Charles Goodyear who founded the Goodyear empire and developed and industry that at one time employed thousands in this area. The arts scene is alive and well here, and the Naugatuck Arts Commission hosts summer concerts as well as sponsoring a community band and choir, teen theater, contests, exhibits and more. Those moving to the area and searching for a house for rent or an apartment for rent in a place with commuting options will find a Metro North railroad station here that runs along the Waterbury Branch of the New Haven Line.
