With a population of about 6,000 residents, Valhalla is a small hamlet located in the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County in southeastern New York. Despite it being a quaint community, it has gained celebrity status because it is the burial place of many famous people. The community gained its name from the inspiration of a fan of opera composer Richard Wagner. The name Valhalla comes from Norse mythology and refers to a heavenly fall of slain warriors in one particular myth. Valhalla’s world famous cemetery has furthered the communities association with death. Since Valhalla is one of the numerous communities that make up the town of Mount Pleasant, the Mount Pleasant Town Hall and Mount Pleasant Town Pool and Community Center are located here. Valhalla’s main street, Columbus Avenue, is home to popular sites including the Valhalla Train Station, Kensico Dame, Holy Name of Jesus Church, and numerous shops and restaurants. The community is bordered by the Town of North Castle and the hamlets of Thornwood and Hawthorne. Other major establishments in Valhalla include the Westchester County Medical Center, New York Medical College, Westchester Community College, and the State University of New York.
