Nicknamed the Gateway to Jones Beach, Wantagh is a charming hamlet situated in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County. Wantagh gained its nickname because of its location directly north of Jones Beach, a beautiful State Park that was developed by the famous Robert Moses. The village has a population of about 20,000 residents. The area where Wantagh is currently located was once settled by the Merokee tribe, which was a member of the Algonquin Native American nation. It wasn’t until the mid-1600’s that Dutch and English settlers began to arrive in the area. Although the village has been known as Wantagh since its establishment, the area was first officially named Jerusalem. Today, Wantagh is filled with rich, historic attractions, and numerous houses that have been home to some of the village’s first settlers. The Jerusalem Society of Friends has served as Wantagh’s primary historic society. In addition to the Jones Beach State Park, other attractions in Wantagh include the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, Mill Pond Park, Wantagh Park, and the Twin Lakes Preserve. Wantagh is also known for its vibrant nightlife, which consists of numerous restaurants, bars, clubs, and music establishments.
