About Waterloo

With a population of about 6,000 residents, the village of Waterloo serves as the county seat of Seneca County. The village is located mostly in the Town of Waterloo, but some of it is situated in the Town of Fayette and the Town of Seneca Falls. The village lies east of Geneva, and it was named after the Waterloo in Belgium, where the famous Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated. Waterloo is also located between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake. The area where Waterloo is currently situated was once settled by the Iroquois Native Americans, but after the Sullivan Expedition passed through the region in 1779, many of the Indians left and many Europeans moved in. The village was incorporated in 1824, and again later in 1866. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared Waterloo to be the official birthplace of Memorial Day. The beautiful village of Waterloo boasts a rich historic heritage and excellent recreational opportunities. Some of the major natural attractions near Waterloo include Sampson State Park, Cayuga Lake State Park, and Seneca Falls.
