About West Sayville

With a population of about 5,000 residents, the charming hamlet of West Sayville is located in the southwest part of the Town of Islip. The area was first inhabited by the Secatogue Tribe, which belonged to the Algonquin Nation. In 1655, the first settlers from Connecticut arrived in the region, and then in 1697, a settler named William Nicoli received some land from William III. One of the first people to live where Sayville is now located was a tailor named John Edwards. He and his wife, Sarah Edwards, built the first home in Sayville, and it was preserved as a historical landmark until it was destroyed by a fire in 1913. Today, the house has been reconstructed and is now home to the Sayville Historical Society, which was founded in 1944.
