About Belmont

Located in Gaston County about 15 miles west of uptown Charlotte, North Caroline, the charming city of Belmont has a population of about 9,000 residents. Although the city was originally named Garibaldi, the city was renamed to honor August Belmont, who was an extremely successful New York banker. The city of Belmont started as a settlement that was built around the Fort at the Point, which was built in the 1750’s due to ongoing hostilities with the Cherokee Native Americans. The South Point Community, which is part of southern Belmont, was the site of Stowesville Mill, which was one of the first three cotton mills in operation in Gaston County. Belmont is also home the Belmont Abbey College, a liberal arts college. The textile industry was originally the economic base of Belmont, but today its economy has diversified to include various businesses. The historic downtown district of Belmont is one of the most popular and bustling areas in the city. The downtown area also has a commercial occupancy rate of 100%, which is a major change from when the area was once considered a “ghost town.” The downtown area is also popular with residents and visitors, who can find new restaurants, unique boutique shops, and other various shops and businesses. With a well established education system, and numerous, exciting attractions, the city of Belmont has something great to offer to everyone.
