The beautiful town of Carrboro is located in Orange County and has a population of about 17,000 residents. Carrboro is also located near Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina. Because it is located west of Chapel Hill, it was originally named West End when it was settled in 1882 around the Durham-Greensboro Southern Railway. When it was incorporated in 1911, it was renamed Venable in honor of Francis Preston Venable, a chemistry professor and UNC president. However, just two years later the town was renamed Carrboro after Julian Shakespeare Carr provided streets and electric power to the community. One of the most popular attractions in Carrboro is the Carrboro Farmer’s Market, which features fresh, local, organic produce, various cheeses, baked goods, and handmade arts and crafts. The town also has an upbeat arts scene, with art events including the Carrboro Music Festival, and Carrboro International Poetry Festival. The town is also filled with many great dining opportunities, which also attraction many university students. Anderson Park in Carrboro also provides numerous outdoor and recreational activities.
