The city of Clinton is located in Sampson County and has a population of about 9,000 residents. Clinton is the largest city and county seat in Sampson County. The city was named for Richard Clinton, a General during the American Revolution. The area where Clinton is currently located was first settled in 1740. The city was officially incorporated in 1852.
